International Joint Research Center for Energy Geotechnics

International Joint Research Center for Energy Geotechnics (referred to as the Energy Geotechnical Center), is one of new international technology cooperation platform built by GeoHohai of Hohai University and the Soil Mechanics Laboratory of EPFL. The Energy Geotechnical Center was formally established in November 2017.

The Energy Geotechnical Center is mainly composed of the GeoHohai at Hohai University, China and the Soil Mechanics Laboratory at the EPFL, Switzerland. It is also associated with La Trobe University in Australia, Flinders University in Australia, Purdue University Northwestern University, and leading companies and research institutes outside the relevant industries. The head of Energy Geotechnical Center in China is Professor Kong Gangqiang of Hohai University. The head of Energy Geotechnical Center in Switzerland is Professor Lyesse Laloui of EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The Energy Geotechnical Center is mainly focused on the research and application of energy geostructures represented by energy piles, energy tunnels, and energy walls, etc. It focuses on interdisciplinary integration with intelligent construction and new energy development, and focuses on the use of shallow geothermal energy. The development and industrialization of a new type of energy geostructures, such as a combination of underground space development and shallow geothermal energy exploit.
